Is free cell service a Thirst Trap? It is if you are a personal finance aficionado like Chip’s Money Tips!
In 2023, Spectrum Mobile lured me in with a free year of unlimited talk and text mobile service if I had Spectrum Internet. I’m already on the Spectrum. Er, uh… I already had Spectrum Internet. I signed up.
I’ve been with Spectrum Mobile for over two years. They use Verizon cell towers. I’ve never had a problem with service anywhere I’ve traveled in the U.S., Canada, or Ireland. Yes, I’ve been to Ireland and so has my phone. We’re fancy like that.
After my free year of Spectrum, they charged me $20/month for a year. Last month, for Year Three, my Spectrum monthly jumped to $30, so I jumped to another service provider.
At the new service provider, I ran into a technical problem. After weeks of trying to fix the other provider’s issue, I asked Spectrum if they’d take me back. I told them, “It’s not you. It’s me.” They bought it!
The lead that I am burying here is that I was able to come back to Spectrum Mobile as a “new user” once again. Therefore, because I had Spectrum Internet, I qualified for ANOTHER free year of Spectrum Mobile. Spectrum ported my number back over to Spectrum Mobile. My free year will save me $360.
So… if you currently have Spectrum Internet, consider switching to Spectrum Mobile for a free year. If you currently have Verizon and like that service, consider getting Spectrum Internet so you can then switch to Spectrum Mobile for a free year.
I visited Spectrum Mobile’s website to find the number to call. That’s how I roll. https://www.spectrum.com/mobile
It’s not really a Chip’s Money Tips post without mention of a credit card hustle, so here goes. This article tells you how I get free cell phone insurance by paying my mobile service bill with a specific credit card. As always, reply to this post or email me if you have any questions.
