Expiring Southwest 80,000 Bonus

Just a quick heads up that the 80,000 bonus point Southwest card offer is scheduled to go away on Wednesday, October 16th. Links often go away a day before the expiration. So if you wanna act, now is a good time.

At the top right side of this website under “Chip’s Favorite Credit Card Offer$” click “Business Credit Cards”. That will take you to a secure site where you can get more info on this bad boy. The “Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card” is the 28th card down. Email me if you have any questions. Full disclosure: I may get a commission if you use my links so… Thanks for clicking through my links!

There are two reasons why you might want to take advantage of this:

  1. 80,000 is a huge bonus. It comes with perks that make the annual fee worth it.
  2. You want the Southwest Companion Pass for 2020-2021. Two Full Years!

Southwest flies all over the US (including Hawaii) as well as some international destinations. The amount of Rapid Rewards points required vary per flight. This past year I have flow trips from Los Angeles to New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Cincinnati, San Francisco, San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. Okay, I didn’t hit Cabo, but I couldda!

If you are like me and love the Southwest Companion Pass, getting this card could get you very close to obtaining it. With the Companion Pass, every time you fly (whether you paid money for the flight or used points) your companion flies free. You could do it daily!

To get the Southwest Companion Pass you need to have earned 110,000 points. Once your 110,000th point hits your account, you get a Companion Pass for the rest of that calendar year and the next one as well.

If you got his card, you have three months from the date your card is opened to spend $5,000 to earn the 80,000 point bonus. So, you’d get this card and make sure you don’t spend your $5,000th dollar on it until January 1, 2020 but before the date your account has been opened for three months.

Don’t panic. Here are 11 Ways to Frugally Meet A Spending Requirement

So, you get the card and spend the $5K to meet the requirement. You are awarded your 80,000 points bonus plus 5,000 points for purchases (at least a point per dollar). Now you have 85,000 points. 25,000 more and you get the Companion Pass.

Then you’d pick up a Southwest Personal card and meet that spend to cover the balance of points you need. Currently Southwest has personal cards with a 60,000 point bonus if you spend $1,000.

I get so much value out of the Companion Pass that I recommend it. But even if that ain’t your thang, the 80,000 bonus is awesome!

Here’s what I wrote about this card months ago:

A few weeks back, Southwest rolled out a card that had an 80,000 point bonus if you met the spending requirement. Southwest has 40K and 60K point bonuses – but 80K was a first!

I love Southwest. They let us check two bags for free. They won’t charge you if you have to change your travel plans. But what I love most is the best deal in the air: The Companion Pass. This card gets you 77% of the way there!

If you fly 100 one-way flights a year or earn 110,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points you earn The Companion Pass. With it, your named companion can fly with you on EVERY flight you take – whether you pay for it with cash or points. The Companion Pass is good for the rest of the calendar year in which you earn it and all of the next year.

If you get the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card, you’ll get an 80,000 point bonus if you spend $5,000 on it in your first three months. You’ll get at least a point for every dollar you spend. So, 85,000 (5,000 meeting spend + 80,000 bonus) gets you very close to a Companion Pass.

If you have already earned 25,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points in 2019, getting this card and meeting the spend would put you over the top for The Companion Pass through 2020! You can see your 2019 point total on Southwest.com under “My Account”.

I don’t know how long Southwest will offer this card or the 80,000 bonus. If you just like the idea of 80,000 bonus points go for it!

If this card’s bonus will not qualify you for the Companion Pass, and you really want a Companion Pass, you might hold off on this card until the 4th quarter of the year so you’re bonus will drop in January 2020. I have no idea how long this card or its bonus will be around.

This is a business credit card. Even if you don’t have an S-Corp or an LLC or some official business entity, you can still apply for this business card if you make money doing something. If you are someone who makes money in an unusual way you can still get the card. I’m talking about dog walkers, people who sell stuff on eBay, and freelancers. Just apply as a “Sole Proprietorship”. During the application process, put your name in the “Legal name of business” and your social in the “Tax identification number” boxes. For example:

The card comes with a $199 annual fee but it has nice perks that make it worthwhile.

This card comes with four upgrades to the A1-15 passes. So at $25-$50 per pass, it is worth at least an extra $100. You get free Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck ($85). Even if you already have those, you could use your card to buy one for someone else and get the amount credited back to your card. Nice gift! There’s free in-flight WiFi and more.
